Lesson Plan 1 – Google Custom Search
INTC 5320
February 2, 2010

OBJECTIVE: Student will be able to research famous female mathematicians in celebration of
women’s history month. Students will be able to learn about mathematicians and the
implications of their contributions. Students will be able to utilize Google Custom Search to
gather information for a short presentation on their Mathematician.

ENDURING UNDERSTANDINGS: Students will understand that the history of mathematicians unfolds the story of man's struggle to explain the quantitative aspects of the world in which he lives. Students will understand that women throughout history have not only furthered our exploration of mathematics, but the struggle of women for equality.

DO NOW: Selected Questions taken from Spiral Review, Open Ended Test Prep and Logical Thinking. Students will begin to discuss how the mathematics we use today has come to be.

ACTIVITIES: Students in groups of two will research a particular female mathematician.
Major facts and information will be gathered about the mathematician using a custom Google Search Engine created by the teacher.
Data to be collected includes (but is not limited to): Date of Birth, Country of Origin,
Early Life, Family Life, Education, Contributions to Mathematics, Publications, Death
Technology is used for the research about the mathematician. After an introduction about famous mathematicians, the teacher invites her class to study about women who are remembered for their contribution to the mathematics. References for where information was obtained must be recorded.

GUIDED PRACTICE: The teacher will demonstrate how to use the generic Google site to search for a male mathematician (Pythagoras for example). Students and the teacher will work together to record the specific data requested and to make note of the references.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE: Students will work in pairs to complete research on their mathematician.
